Why Is Electricity So Important?

Whether we realize it or not, electricity is an essential part of everyday life for most people on the planet. Each year, all the countries in the world combine to use over 23,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. One terawatt-hour is equivalent to one trillion watts per hour—that’s a lot of energy! But, why is electricity so important in our lives? In this article, we’ll discuss the importance of electricity and how critical it really is.

The Importance of Electricity in Human Life

Ever since electricity was discovered, it’s become an increasingly relevant part of everyday life for many people around the world. Here are some of the reasons why electricity is so important to us:

  • Lighting - Perhaps one of the most important roles of electricity in our lives is that it provides us with light. Without electricity, we wouldn’t be able to do much when the sun goes down, but now we are still able to see when it is dark out. That means we can do important things like read, write, work, light our houses and other indoor areas, and even illuminate entire cities. The light electricity provides increases the potential of what we can accomplish and when we can accomplish it.
  • Heating and Cooling - Electricity is also important because it helps us to heat and cool things we use every day. We heat or cool our homes using electricity so we can remain comfortable even when the weather outside is intolerable. We’re also able to store food for longer in refrigerators and freezers, as well as being able to easily cook with a stove or oven—all thanks to electricity. Whether it’s for cooking, storing food, or keeping ourselves safe and comfortable, electricity is crucial for heating and cooling purposes.
  • Innovation, Technology, and Manufacturing - Electricity has also been a key part of innovation, technology, and manufacturing ever since its discovery. Without electricity, we wouldn’t have been able to invent the majority of things that have been made in the last two centuries—like light bulbs, telephones, railroads, cars, computers, and more.
  • Electricity is also essential to both innovate new types of technology and power that technology. What good is a computer or smartphone if it doesn’t have any power? Access to these technological devices has also allowed us to change the landscape of education and how we learn things. It also has changed how we communicate with each other.
  • We also rely on electricity for all of our manufacturing needs. This includes powering factories and production plants that make items that people need. These items include things like phones, cars, airplanes, medical equipment, and more. Without electricity, we wouldn’t be able to produce these items in the same way, at the same volume, or as quickly as we do.

  • Transportation and Infrastructure - Electricity is also essential in our lives because it is necessary for transportation and infrastructure. We wouldn’t be able to drive cars or fly in airplanes without electricity. Similarly, we wouldn’t have many of the things that make up our infrastructure without electricity—like electrical grids to supply energy to homes and businesses, internet and cellular networks, and the ability to build other necessary things in the same capacity, like roads, bridges, dams, and more.

It’s clear how important electricity has become in daily life for billions of people all around the world. Unfortunately, there are still large areas where individuals don’t have access to reliable electricity or any electricity at all.

The Elumis Foundation believes that no child should be left in the dark. Our goal is to use solar kits to bring light to families and children around the world who don’t have access to electricity. With the renewable power of the sun, we can change the lives of people all around the world, give them opportunities they wouldn’t have without access to electricity, and help our planet in the process. Find out how you can get involved and help us make a difference today!

About the Elumis Foundation

The Elumis Foundation is a certified non-profit organization that was created in 2018 by siblings Eva and Michael Sakellakis (ages 15 and 13), looking to make a difference. Their father, who has his own successful solar business Elumis, helped and inspired them to form the foundation. Together they formed a Non-Profit 501(c)3 organization. This allows all donations to be tax-deductible by the donors. 100% of all donations received will fund the distribution of solar kits to be given to families who do not have electricity in impoverished areas of the world.

Elumis’ goal is to bring light to families and kids without that privilege through solar kits. These solar kits are powered through solar panels and can provide light and electricity for a family for up to 24 continuous hours. The Foundation has already made its first donation of 1000 solar kits in Vietnam and plans to distribute more kits to third-world countries throughout Africa, South East Asia, Central America, and India. Our goal is to distribute at least 100,000 kits to families in need.
